Norfolk Tour Company founder Joshua Weinstein will discuss the fascinating art and architecture of historic Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk.
Elmwood is indeed a unique intersection of time and space. Created in 1853, it contains much more than the remains of over 40,000 people; the beliefs, norms, and aspirations of the deceased and their families endure in the cemetery's monuments, epitaphs, and commissioned works.
This month's lecture will explore some of the artists, artwork, architecture, and symbolism that are found in Elmwood. From award winning painters, to Gothic cathedral-inspired mausoleums, to bronze sculptures, stained glass, and marble tableaus --- we will discuss Elmwood as not only a cemetery, but as an outdoor museum as well.
This lecture is free and open to the public, as part of Norfolk Historical Society's "Louis Guy Lecture Series."
