“The truest, fiercest songwriter of his generation.”

Nobody writes better songs about the heartland than James McMurtry. Dubbed “America’s fiercest songwriter” by CNN, McMurtry writes songs about lovers and losers and those just trying to get by, “characters so real that you’re sure they’re going to climb out of the speakers and look you in the eyes” (Voice of America). When The New York Times Magazine selected “25 Songs That Tell Us Where Music is Going,” McMurtry’s “We Can’t Make It Here” made the list, along with a number of best-of selections by critics. His lyrics conjure up a “Texastentialist panorama of gray-sky lucidity and neon highway jungles (Village Voice), and if we’re lucky, we get to ride along.
Longtime critic Robert Christgau declared McMurtry's "We Can't Make It Here" the best song of the 2000s.
